UK supermarket group Sainsbury’s has won the innovation accolade at Motor Transport magazine’s awards evening.
The prize was presented to the grocer for the refrigeration system it uses within its lorry fleet. In partnership with Carrier Transicold, Sainsbury’s has adapted a system originally developed for sea containers, for use within lorry fleets.
Since August 2013, the eco-friendly refrigeration system has been operating from Sainsbury’s Elstree depot delivering frozen goods to London stores. The NaturalLINE system uses a non-ozone depleting natural refrigerant with a global warming potential of one to create a more eco-friendly and efficient way to refrigerate the supermarket’s lorries.
The move is part of the organisation’s drive to reduce carbon emissions across its business.=
Sainsbury’s said it will continue to work with Carrier Transicold’s to develop the NaturalLINE system and it is hoped, in time, that it will completely replace the existing gas-reliant systems.
